Perfumes For the Woman and For the Man – What is the Best Choice? by Jenny Routledge
All perfumes start off with the same basic aromatic compounds but with differing essential oils and natural ingredients. Some however do add in quite a few synthetic ingredients to substitute the more expensive compounds of the perfume. Below is an explanation of what is included in each type of fragrance. These concentrations do vary between perfume makers and manufacturers but its a general rule that these are the approximate mixes:
Perfume: contains typically around 15 – 40% of the aromatic compound, thus the scent will last longer than with any other fragrance – usually 8 to 12 hours.
Eau de parfum or parfum de toilette (EDP): normally will contain around 15% of the aromatic compound and will last around 6 to 8 hours.
Eau de toilette (EDT): this is the most common of perfumes to be sold these days. It contains 10 to 15% aromatic compound and lasts for around about 4 to 6 hours.
Eau de cologne (EDC): when first applied EDC is very refreshing but it will only last around a couple of hours to 3 hours. It is made up of 5% aroma compound.
After shaves and splash on colognes: these contain only about 1 – 3% aromatic compound which means that they will last no longer than an hour or two. This is the cheapest option, of course.
Men’s colognes and after shaves are often considered to be longer lasting than eau de toilette but in fact the opposite is true. As can be seen above, EDT contains 10 to 15% aromatic compound whereas EDC or aftershave only between 1% and 5%. EDT will thus outlast both. With this information you will now probably know more than most perfume sales people do. And do not be fooled by the size of the bottle the product is sold in. This has absolutely nothing to do with the quality or strength of its constituents.
