Perfume and Aftershave Look Set to be Top Gifts This Christmas by Sam Qam
This month leading market research company The NPD Group, Inc., unveiled the results from their annual survey of consumers shopping intentions for the Christmas season. One of the most notable pieces of information in the survey is that, despite the year to date showing a marked decline in fragrance sales, consumers appear to be planning to buy fragrances as a Christmas gift in higher numbers than recent years.
The NPD Group are one of the most prominent groups of market research analysts working in the retail industry and every year they conduct a survey investigating what types of product they are intending to buy as gifts over the Christmas period. The NPD’s BeautyTrends division had previously noted that between January and September 2009 prestige fragrances had seen a dramatic decline of 11 percent in sales when compared to the first 9 months of 2008. Despite this the industry had seen a couple of areas with slight increases; surprisingly, give the current state of the economy, the more exclusive perfumes which are priced at upwards of $75 a bottle have seen average increases of 3%.
However, despite the overall decline, The NPD’s annual survey of Christmas buying intentions has shown an increase of two points with 19 percent (one in every five) of consumers stating that they were planning to buy someone perfume or aftershave as a gift this year.
Karen Grant, the vice president and global industry analyst for The NPD Group, summed up the report by stating that: “It will be interesting to see how all this translates into prestige department store fragrance sales, especially as we have seen a number of important new women’s fragrances begin to roll out and retailers also offering consumers attractive promotions.”
Indeed, it is always the fourth quarter of the calendar year that is by far the most important period for sales in the prestige fragrance industry. Perfume and aftershave are both Christmas gifts that remain ever popular and with many stores offering tempting discounts on new fragrances and established classics (like Jean Paul Gaultier Perfume) it will be interesting to see whether the figures of consumer intentions pan out, providing a brief glimmer of hope to an industry that has taken a huge hit over the last few months.
