Atlanta Braves Tickets – Hudson Has to be Comeback Player of the Year
Before the season, Tim Hudson was an afterthought in the minds of most baseball analysts, far from being one of the crucial links in an intense divisional race. Yet here we stand in mid-August and Hudson is not only having a good season but he’s easily the biggest reason that the Atlanta Braves are still sitting atop the National League East. Even if he falters and the Braves cannot hold off the more talented Phillies down the stretch, Hudson still has put his name back on the map as one of the best pitchers in the game.
After a strong 2007 season campaign with the Braves, Hudson struggled with injury in 2008 and had to shut down his 2009 season after just seven starts to have Tommy John surgery. Creeping up in age and with a ton of innings on his arm, it was very unclear whether or not Hudson would be able to recover at all, let alone to a level that could possibly anchor a pitching staff. But as Hudson has to be given credit for coming back strong, the Braves also have to be rewarded for their patience and long-term vision. After his successful surgery and at the age of 34, Hudson received a three-year contract extension to stay with the club – the kind of risky maneuver that could have buried a team like the Braves had it not worked out. But the Braves had confidence in Hudson’s recovery and he started the season as the third pitcher in the rotation.
And disappoint Hudson did not. In April, Hudson gave the Braves quality starts in each of his outings and sported a solid 3.28 ERA for the month, which is as much production as the Braves could have hoped for and Braves fans crossed their fingers that he could keep it up. But he didn’t keep it up; he actually got better. Hudson has had a sub-3.00 ERA each month since April and pushed his ERA all the way down to 2.24 as of Aug. 10, giving him a better ERA than Roy Halladay, Ubaldo Jimenez, Chris Carpenter, Matt Latos and Tim Lincecum for the season.
The strong pitching of Hudson has also translated into plenty of wins, which has in turn sold loads of <a href=”http://www.stubhub.com/atlanta-braves-tickets/”>Atlanta Braves tickets</a> in the process. Down the stretch, with the Phillies heating up and nipping on the Braves’ heels, Hudson has won five of his last six starts, letting up one earned run or less in each of his victories over that time span.
Compared to the rest of his career, which is also very impressive, Hudson may even be having his best overall season. To date, his best complete season was in 2003, when he went 16-7 with a 2.70 ERA with the Oakland A’s. Considering that Hudson has been one of the very top pitchers in the league this season, these types of numbers should guarantee that he’s the Comeback Player of the Year and he should even get a couple of votes for the Cy Young. Ironically enough, Hudson’s biggest competition for Comeback Player may actually be former teammate Barry Zito, who has resurrected his career in San Fran after an absolutely disastrous beginning.
But Hudson isn’t worrying about awards right now; he’s too busy trying to guide the Braves back to the postseason in manager Bobby Cox’s last season as Atlanta’s manager. With both Derek Lowe and Tommy Hanson having so-so years, the Braves will lean on the 35-year-old Hudson down the stretch if they are going to take down the N.L. East.
